If you’re anything like me — flying several times a year or comparing the top-tier benefits across the three major airline alliances — SkyTeam Elite Plus is a status you’ll inevitably come across. Over the past few years, I’ve flown extensively with multiple SkyTeam airlines and experienced both SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus firsthand. I can say this without hesitation: Elite Plus is where the real alliance-wide value begins.
In this article, I’ll share my personal experience with SkyTeam Elite Plus — what it really is, how it feels to use in practice, and the realistic ways I’ve seen people (including myself) earn it.
What SkyTeam Elite Plus Means to Me: A True Alliance Passport
SkyTeam Elite Plus is the highest elite tier within the SkyTeam alliance, comparable to Star Alliance Gold and Oneworld Sapphire/Emerald.
One important thing to understand upfront: SkyTeam itself does not issue Elite Plus status.
I didn’t “apply” for Elite Plus through the alliance. Instead, I earned it by reaching a qualifying elite tier with a single SkyTeam member airline. Once you hit that level — whether it’s Gold, Platinum, or an equivalent — you automatically receive SkyTeam Elite Plus, and it works across the entire alliance.
Stay loyal to one airline, and you’re rewarded everywhere within SkyTeam.
SkyTeam Elite vs Elite Plus: You Feel the Difference Quickly
When I first held SkyTeam Elite, the benefits were decent but not particularly impressive. After upgrading to Elite Plus, the difference was immediate and very noticeable.
For me, the real value of Elite Plus comes down to three things:
- Worldwide lounge access — even when flying economy
- Extra checked baggage allowance
- Meaningful priority treatment (security, boarding, rebooking, standby)
These are the benefits that actually change how a trip feels.
